You know the teams and the players and you feel confident that you can pick the winning side, but you don’t know all the lingo or how each bet works or all the type of bets that are available for college football betting. We’ll do our best on giving you an overview of most of the popular football wagering options.
Point Spread Betting
The most common bet in college football betting is on the point spread. A point spread wager is a handicap used by the bookmakers in hopes of getting balanced action on a game. For example Alabama is hosting UL Monroe at home on September 26th. It doesn’t take a football expert to know that the chances of UL Monroe of winning this game are not much lower than my chances of winning the Powerball lottery this year. In other words close to nil. If the sportsbook offered a wager that you just had to pick the winner at even money meaning wager $100 to win $100 the sportsbook would be out of business in a week. Instead the bookmaker offers a handicap on the game known as a “point spread”, so we might see Alabama with a point spread of -34 for this game. If you wagered on Alabama on the point spread you would need the Crimson Tide to win the game by 35 or more points to cash your bet. On the other side of the line if you wagered on the Warhawks you would win your bet if they won or if Alabama won the game by less than the 34 point spread.
Money Line Betting
The sportsbook also offer a moneyline bet on most NCAA football games. The moneyline set by the lines maker is also a handicap, but instead of points you give or receive money. Most betting shops will not have a money line on this game, but the ones that do may have this game at Alabama -5000 which would mean that you need to risk $5000 to win $100. If you chose the underdog UL Monroe a line like +3500 may be shown on the odds board which would have bettors wagering on the Warhawks on the moneyline being rewarded with $3500 for every $100 risked if ULM pulled off the huge upset. .
Parlay Betting
A parlay bet is a wager that requires multiple event to win for you to have a winning bet. You can use any combination of totals, moneylines or point spreads when compiling your parlay. So you may have a bet that looks like this.
Wager
9/3/2015 6:00 PM South Carolina* -155 vs North Carolina
9/3/2015 7:00 PM Oklahoma State* -22½ -110 vs Central Michigan
9/3/2015 9:00 PM Minnesota U* +14 -110 vs TCU
9/4/2015 1:00 AM Colorado/Hawaii* Over 58½ -110
Risking $100.00 To Win $1052.00
As you see you are rewarded handsomely for the risk with in the above example a payout of 10.52 to 1 on the four event parlay. Note that you must win all the events for you to receive the full payout or tie. If you tie on an event the payout drops accordingly with the event being removed.
Teaser Betting
A teaser is similar to a parlay in that you can group multiple events together to increase your payout. The difference is that with a teaser you are getting added points to subtract from your point spread line in the case of a favorite or add to the spread for an underdog. Most sportsbooks offer teasers of 6-7 points but there are some that offer teaser lines from 4 points all the way to 20 points.
Future Bets
A future bet in college football is normally based odd to win a conference or title. I’ve included examples on how the odds board would look for the AAC Conference Champion and the for the NCAAF National Football Championship.
