Rams' Tre Mason doesn't report to camp, hasn't talked to team in months

There’s a concerning story developing around the Los Angeles Rams and Tre Mason: not only has Mason not reported to training camp, team brass haven’t had any contact with him in months.

Coach Jeff Fisher told media on Saturday that the Rams have placed Mason, a third-year running back, on the reserve/did not report list, but at this point, the team is more concerned with Mason the person than Mason the player.

“It was our only option,” Fisher said of the transaction, via Rams reporter Myles Simmons. “I haven’t personally spoken with Tre since the [2015] season ended – when we had out check-out physicals. I tried numerous times after the incident to reach him, and I was unsuccessful. Been communicating through the offseason with his agent, Bus Cook, (and) had minimal conversation with family members. But Tre has made a decision not to communicate with us – not to talk, not talking with his teammates.”

(We assume by “the incident” Fisher means the March 5 event when Mason was pulled over for speeding in Hollywood, Fla. and then arrested when he refused to get out of the car. Mason was tased by authorities.)

“Right now we’re more concerned with Tre Mason’s well-being than we are his football career,” Fisher continued. “We’re going to continue to try to reach him to see where he’s at. But right now, the best thing for us to do is to put him on a did not report list, so he does not count against our 90-man roster.”

TMZ reported earlier in the week that police have been called to Mason’s Florida home five times since March 28, including last weekend, and his family is very concerned for his mental health and personal safety.

Multiple units were at Mason’s home in the middle of the afternoon on July 23; the 22-year old was not arrested.

However, repeated bizarre behavior and angry outbursts have his family worried. TMZ reports that Mason has not hurt anyone else, and on at least one occasion, Mason agreed to check into a facility, though it’s unclear whether that has happened.

Mason played in 13 games with three starts last year for the Rams, totaling 207 yards on 75 carries with one touchdown.
