Carroll was entering the last year of his current contract, which he signed in April 2014 after leading the Seahawks to Super Bowl victory.
The news of Carroll’s extension comes two days after the Seahawks announced a similar agreement with general manager John Schneider. Schneider’s deal, reportedly for around $4 million per year, would make him one of the highest paid GMs in the NFL.
If Carroll, 64, coaches through the end of the new deal, it could see him reach a decade on the job in Seattle. He was hired by the Seahawks in January of 2010 after nine seasons in charge at USC. His previous NFL head coaching stints were with the Jets (one year) and Patriots (three years) in the 1990s.
Carroll’s initial deal with Seattle was a reported five-year, $35 million contract. His three-year extension in 2014 reportedly increased his annual salary to $9 million.
Carroll has compiled a 60-36 regular season record with the Seahawks. After two 7-9 seasons in 2010 and 2011, the first of which resulted in a playoff win, Seattle has recorded double-digit wins in four-straight seasons — 11-5 in 2012, 13-3 in 2013, 12-4 in 2014 and 10-6 in 2015.
Each of those four seasons has also brought at least one playoff win. The Super Bowl win in February of 2014 was followed up by an NFC championship and a Super Bowl loss to the Patriots the following year.
Carroll will turn 65 in September. He will be 68 by the time his latest extension expires.
