Alex Bregman's dad couldn't believe his son's debut was happening
For a baseball player, there are few moments more important than his Major League debut. And unless he’s being called in as a pinch hitter, a Major League debut is actually a nine-inning series of moments. There’s the introduction at the beginning of the game, the first time he makes an out, the first at-bat, and each first marks the end of his journey to the Majors and the beginning of his journey as a Major League baseball player.
On Monday, it was time for Alex Bregman’s moments. The Houston Astros top prospect was called up to play third base in that night’s game against the New York Yankees. And no one was more excited than Bregman’s parents, who were at Minute Maid Park in Houston to watch their son make his Major League debut.
When Bregman was announced for his first ever Major League at-bat, the whole crowd went wild, giving him a standing ovation and showing off homemade signs like “GEAUX BREGMAN” and “WELCOME TO H-TOWN.” Bregman’s dad was so overwhelmed by the response his son was getting that he simply couldn’t believe it was happening.

If my lipreading is correct, his dad is saying “Oh my God! … Look at this! LOOK AT THIS!!!”

Bregman went 0-for-4 at the plate in his debut (though he missed a grand slam in the sixth by just a few feet), but the field is where he got the chance to show off some of his skills. He was more than solid playing third, a position he hasn’t played very often. (He came up as a shortstop, but that position is currently occupied by Carlos Correa, who isn’t going anywhere any time soon.) In the second inning, he made a tough backhanded grab on a sharp grounder and threw it all the way across the diamond to first, where it landed right on the money in Luis Valbuena’s glove.
He may have missed out on getting his first hit on Monday, but it didn’t matter to Bregman. As he told MLB.com’s Jordan Ray, he still had a heck of a good time.
“It felt better than I thought it would feel,” Bregman said. “It felt amazing. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had.”
Baseball is really awesome, you guys.
