Did Aldon Smith post himself breaking NFL substance abuse policy on Periscope?
Oakland Raiders pass-rusher Aldon Smith is currently serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
So a recent video may get him in even more hot water with the league.
CSNBayArea.com has uncovered an archived Periscope video that shows a man and a woman engaged in a “fire up session,” and the man is almost certainly Smith.
Their faces aren’t seen in the video, but it is posted to the account “@ravenga”, and other videos on that account clearly show Smith’s face as he talks to the camera about different things – one recent video is called “Pokemon go” and another is “venting.”
While the name on the account right now says Ricky, older videos on the @ravenga account use the name Aldon.
In the “fire up session,” posted a couple of weeks ago, you see a rolled-up green cigar/cigarette at one point, but the female in the expletive-filled video is trying to talk Smith out of posting himself online smoking drugs.
Here’s the partial transcript, via CSNBayArea.com:
Female: (Expletive deleted), you shouldn’t even be posting that.
Male: (coughing) (Expletive deleted), do you see my face?
Female: No, but what if…
Male: They don’t have my name. This is just a fire up session.
Just as the video approaches the one-minute mark, the male says, “It’s not like I put ‘Aldon Smith'” and it quickly cuts off.
Doh!
While some may not see the big deal in Smith live-broadcasting a fire-up session, he’s already on a year-long suspension, and the league’s substance abuse policy specifically stipulates that suspended players are to abstain from drug use for the entire length of their suspension.
But while on the field Smith was one a budding superstar, racking up an eye-popping 33.5 sacks for the San Francisco 49ers in his first two seasons, off the field he has not been able to stay out of his own way – CSNBayArea.com has a rundown of Smith’s transgressions here. It appears that hasn’t changed.
