Source: Beaubois declines Mavs' offer to return
There will not be a Rodrigue Beaubois reunion with the Dallas Mavericks this season.
Beaubois has declined the Mavs’ invitation to return to Dallas, according to a league source. The 2009 first-round pick has opted to return to Europe instead of accepting the Mavs’ offer of a three-year partially guaranteed deal for the veterans minimum salary.
Spanish reports indicate that Beaubois, 28, is close to agreeing on a deal to sign with the club Saski Baskonia in Spain.
The Mavs hoped to bring Beaubois, who played in France the past three seasons, to training camp to compete with summer league star Jonathan Gibson for a regular-season roster spot. Gibson, 28, who averaged 42 points per game in China last season and led the Mavs’ Las Vegas summer team in scoring, recently signed a three-year minimum deal that features a fully guaranteed salary in the first season.
Beaubois had flashes of brilliance as a rookie, highlighted by a 40-point performance in a win over fellow rookie guard Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors, and at one point was labeled by owner Mark Cuban as close to “untouchable” in trade talks. But injuries, including two foot surgeries and a hand operation, contributed to the fizzling of his NBA career. He averaged 7.1 points and 2.1 assists in 182 games over four seasons with the Mavs and hasn’t played in the NBA since his rookie contract expired at the end of the 2012-13 season.
