Nick Markakis relives childhood and breaks window with foul ball
You know the old childhood trope, right? You’re playing baseball in the yard with your friends, and someone hits the ball so hard that it breaks a window. You’ve probably seen it in movies and on TV, or maybe even broken a window or two with your friends. But you don’t usually think about this happening with baseball players, though. They play in stadiums, where glass windows are in hard-to-reach places.
Well, Atlanta Braves right fielder Nick Markakis has news for everyone. Breaking windows with baseballs isn’t just for kids anymore.
In the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s game between the Braves and the Cincinnati Reds, Nick Markakis was taking hacks against Reds pitcher Jumbo Diaz. On the first pitch of the at-bat, a 97 mph fastball, Markakis hit it sharply foul. The ball zinged over the third base side at the perfect angle to thread the needle and smash right through a big glass window.
Thankfully, the window didn’t shatter like the glass panes of yore. (And the ball wasn’t sticking out of it halfway like you see on those car decals.) The ball went right through it and left a huge hole, and while the entire pane had spiderweb cracks, it mostly stayed together. It’s just like the glass on your windshield, which is laminated to prevent shattering and splintering.

No one was hurt by the renegade baseball, and Markakis won’t have to do what kids do and give up his allowance to get it fixed. The Reds know that at a ballpark, anything and everything is at risk of being smashed by a baseball.
