Lewandowski won't join Madrid – Ancelotti
Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti says Robert Lewandowski will not be allowed to join Real Madrid this summer.
Poland international Lewandowski, 27, has three years remaining on his contract with Bayern but had signalled his interest in a move to Madrid before Euro 2016.
In late May, his agent told Der Spiegel that talks with Madrid had taken place, and Lewandowski said he was tempted to “try something new” after six years in the German top flight.
Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge quickly ruled out a sale, though, and new Bayern boss Ancelotti has now told Sport Bild: “Lewandowski will stay here because he’s one of the best attackers in the world. It’s as simple as that.”
Ancelotti, who was in charge at Madrid between 2013 and 2015, said the European champions do not need to reinforce their attack.
“They have a lot of fantastic players, for instance Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo,” he said. “Real don’t need Lewandowski on top and, even if they did, Bayern won’t sell Lewandowski. Why should we voluntarily give away one of the best attackers in the world?”
There had also been rumours that Ancelotti is interested in bringing in Alvaro Morata, who returned to Madrid this summer after two years at Juventus, but the Italian coach has dismissed the claims.
“The only truth in those rumours is that Morata my discovery at Real and that he’s a very good player,” he said. “But I’d never swap Lewandowski with any other player in the world.”
Ancelotti also said that his tactical plans mean he does not need a second striker at Bayern and that the club “still have Thomas Muller for the role in central attack should Lewandowski not be able to play.”
