Yangervis Solarte makes great catch topped with nacho cheese
If you love food puns mixed with baseball or vice versa, then you’ll love this play by San Diego Padres third baseman Yangervis Solarte.
Solarte, who briefly played alongside Derek Jeter during his stint with the New York Yankees in 2014, channeled the future Hall of Famer with a grab that reminded us of Jeter’s iconic dive into the stands at Yankee Stadium.

It wasn’t quite that vicious though. Solarte didn’t bloody his chin or risk losing any teeth. It was more delicious as Solarte tumbled into the stands, made the catch and then walked away with a baseball topped with nacho cheese.
The memorable play happened during the ninth inning of the Padres 4-1 win against the Giants. Since then, it’s been labeled everything from “nacho ordinary catch” to the “cheesiest play” in baseball this season.
And why not? As many weird moments as we see during a season, including those involving food, when have we ever seen a live ball end up covered in nacho cheese?
Based on that alone, this play deserves its own label for uniqueness. Just as Solarte deserves a gold star for his effort. No, he didn’t go crashing into the stands with reckless abandon, but there was still some risk of bodily harm. He measured it well, made the play and now he’ll be on every great play/blooper reel for the next 20 years.
