J.A. Happ thinks Canadians are weird for bagging their milk
When J.A. Happ signed with the Blue Jays in the offseason it was a return to a familiar place, having played in Toronto from 2012-14.
The 33-year-old pitcher was happy to be back and his results – 12 wins and a 3.36 ERA at the All-Star break – speak to that. There is one thing, however, that even after all these years in Toronto still raises his eyebrow: how Canadians buy their milk.

Say what? Happ told Sportsnet.ca’s Kristina Rutherford that the fact milk is generally sold in bags, not jugs, in Ontario is something he’s still trying to understand:
Is there anything you’re still not used to in Canada?
I think I’ve gotten used to most of the stuff. Grocery shopping is a little different. I still don’t understand the bagged milk situation here.
What?
You guys sell milk in bags and I don’t really get why, or what you do then with the bags. Other than that it seems like Canada’s doing a pretty good job. [Laughs.] But I don’t get the milk. Put it in a gallon jug so you don’t have the sloppy, messy bag.
You know you put the bag in a milk jug, right?
Where’s the jug? Do you have to buy the jug separately? Why are they not in the jug already?
Oh my gosh. You have to ask someone at the grocery store for help.
Why do I have to ask? I should just grab it from the counter and it should be ready for me to drink.
Yes, it’s true, a bag is the most common method for storing milk in Ontario. Here, see for yourself:

Happ’s revelation is a funny one and battles lines were drawn: those who find bagged milk normal and those who don’t. Hopefully finding out the use of milk bags isn’t widespread across Canada – for example, they’re rarely found in Western Canada– makes Happ feel less alone on his walks through the dairy section at the grocery store. But living in Toronto, it is a reality he has to deal with.
