Green picks up where left off in RailRiders win – Scranton Times-Tribune
Chad Green continues his dominance over Triple-A batters in 2016.
The 25-year-old right-hander, owner of the lowest ERA in the International League, threw eight shutout innings as the RailRiders posted a 2-0 win over Gwinnett in the first game of the second half at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia, on Thursday.
Green ran his streak to 25 straight scoreless innings in Triple-A and lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.41. He has not allowed a run in the minors since giving up three runs in the third inning of a start June 16 against Toledo. Green then threw seven shutout innings against Toledo on June 22 and six scoreless innings against Syracuse on June 27 before being recalled to New York. In two starts with the Yankees, he allowed one run on three hits in six innings in a win against San Diego and then gave up seven runs in 4⅓ innings in a loss against Cleveland before being optioned to the RailRiders on July 9.
On Thursday, in his first start since being optioned, Green retired the first 13 batters he faced before surrendering a single to Rio Ruiz with one out in the fifth. He retired the next 11 batters in order, facing one over the minimum through eight innings with eight strikeouts.
Kirby Yates allowed a walk in the ninth inning, but held Gwinnett scoreless to earn his second save as the RailRiders posted their franchise record-tying 15th shutout of the season, equaling the 2003 Red Barons.
The RailRiders had a single in each of the first five innings and led off four of those innings with a hit, but could not get a run across against Gwinnett starter Casey Kelly.
In the sixth inning, Tyler Austin hit a one-out single and Ike Davis followed with a home run to right center field to give the RailRiders a 2-0 lead. Davis went 2 for 4 in the game after going 5 for 30 in eight games with the RailRiders this season.
Pete Kozma led off the seventh with a single but was erased on a double play. Ben Gamel followed with a two-out double but Ryan Weber got Donovan Solano to pop out to end the inning.
Gwinnett put a runner in scoring position for the first time in the ninth inning against Yates. Blake Lalli worked a one-out walk, went to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a ground out. But Yates got a pop out from Omar Infante to end the game.
