Larry Bird 'couldn't imagine' joining Magic Johnson and Lakers
Larry Bird said he couldn’t imagine himself as a player making a similar move to what Kevin Durant did in joining the Golden State Warriors.
Bird commented on the situation in an interview on Sirius XM NBA radio after Durant announced his decision to join the Warriors, who came back from a 3-1 deficit in the Western Conference finals to beat his Oklahoma City Thunder.
“I know back in the day, I couldn’t imagine going to the Lakers and playing with Magic Johnson. I’d rather try to beat him,” Bird said. “I could never imagine myself going and joining another team with great players, because I had great players and I was in a great situation.”
Bird may not have joined forces with Johnson and the Showtime Lakers, but he clearly had a good enough situation, winning three NBA championships in his time with Boston and playing with the likes of Kevin McHale, Robert Parish and Dennis Johnson.
