Paris (AFP) – If Didier Deschamps steers France to a Euro 2016 triumph against Portugal he will become only the second man to have won the competition as a player and a coach.
Former Germany coach Berti Vogts was the first to have won the tournament as a player and a coach, 24 years apart.
Vogts won the European Championship with Die Mannschaft in 1972, although he missed the 3-0 win over Russia in the final due to injury.
After a sterling career that saw him capped 96 times, Vogts was appointed Germany coach and steered them to victory at Euro ’96 with a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in England.
Deschamps was an integral part of Roger Lemerre’s side when Les Bleus followed their 1998 World Cup triumph with victory over Italy in the final of Euro 2000.
Italy’s defeat deprived their coach at the time, legendary goalkeeper Dino Zoff of joining the double winners’ club. Zoff won the European Championship with Italy in 1968.
