- It seems like it’s been years since I’ve had to put any thought into who should top the SP rankings. I decided to cross my fingers and hope for the best with Clayton Kershaw’s back. If Jake Arrieta was throwing like he was a couple of months ago, Kershaw certainly would have slid below him. Arrieta’s stock is down a bit, though. I’m not overly concerned, but his command is off and his velocity is down a tad.
- The injury to Joe Ross‘ shoulder ensures that Lucas Giolito will hang around in the Nationals’ rotation for a while longer. I don’t expect him to spend the entire remainder of the season there or he’d be higher than his current No. 60.
- The Blue Jays are wavering on whether to return Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen during the final two months of the season, as was the original plan. Given his performance, it’s not surprising that they’re suddenly so unsure of themselves. Still, they made the original decision with his best interests in mind, and they’re throwing those best interests out the window if they let him rack up 180+ innings this year after he threw 101 last year (his career high is 133 and he’s already at 113 now). Obviously, he deserves to be rated higher than his current 74, but since he still could go the pen and he’ll probably wear down if it doesn’t happen, it seems like the right place for him.
- As much as I wanted to see what Jameson Taillon could do, he just didn’t seem like a very good bet to stay healthy, which is why he didn’t crack the top 100 in the rankings last month. The hope is that he’ll return from shoulder fatigue in a couple of weeks, but he’ll remain an injury risk afterwards. The Pirates promoted Chad Kuhl in his place, and Kuhl is at least a streaming option in mixed leagues. I have higher hopes for Tyler Glasnow, though he’d recently been issuing walks in bunches in Triple-A. His stuff is so good that he can overcome the walks, but he’s not going to work deep into games.
