USA Field Hockey Picks Gonzalez for Rio Olympics – UConn Huskies

STORRS, Conn. – Coming off a bronze medal finish in the 2016 Hockey Champions Trophy, former UConn standout Melissa Gonzalez has been officially named to the U.S.A. Field Hockey roster for the Rio Olympics this August.
It will be Gonzalez’s second time competing in the Summer Olympics, following her appearance in the 2012 London Games.
Gonzalez, a 2008 graduate of the University of Connecticut, is one of two players on the team that rotates use of the captain armband. It is her leadership, as well as her stellar play, that has helped lead the U.S. National Team to fifth place in the world rankings.
In the last game of the Hockey Champions Trophy, it was Gonzalez’s shootout goal that lifted the U.S. past Australia, earning the Americans a third-place finish. The U.S. hadn’t finished third in the tournament since 1995 previously.
The Rio Olympics begin on August 5 and go to August 21, as Team USA will compete in Group B with Argentina, Australia, Great Britain, India and Japan.
