David Ross receives special Father’s Day card from Cubs teammate
Father’s Day can mean different things to different people. The general idea though is to honor or remember a father or father figure who had an immeasurable impact on our lives.
To Chicago Cubs superstar Anthony Rizzo, that in part means honoring one of his own. As in, one of his very own teammates, David Ross.
No, Ross is not actually Rizzo’s father, but he’s certainly played that role to many of the Cubs’ younger players in a baseball sense. Oh, who are we kidding, he’s played that to every one of his teammates, mainly because he’s older than all of them. But also because he loves being a mentor. Those relationships are what earned him the nickname “Grandpa Rossy.”

It also earned him this.
If something can be heartfelt and tongue-in-cheek all at once, this would be it. It’s meant to be a fun gesture on Rizzo’s part, but it’s all based on respect and admiration for a veteran who has helped lead and helped shaped many of these young Cubs as people.
They may have fun with him. They may have fun at his expense. But they all love him. Perhaps even more now after his sixth-inning homer on Saturday proved to be the game-winner in the Cubs 4-3 victory over the Pirates.
Above all though, they’ll miss him when he walks away from baseball after this season to do his favorite job in life: Be a real father.
