Astros GM confuses fans with tweet supporting Cardinals
Given the recent history between the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals, you wouldn’t expect the two sides to be all that friendly. Then again, in the case of current Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, the circumstances are a little different.
Luhnow was front and center in the now infamous hacking scandal that saw former Cardinals scouting director Chris Correa illegally gain access into the Astros’ database. The database, known as Ground Control, included scouting reports, statistics and summaries of trade discussions. It was set up by Luhnow, who used a similar system known as Red Bird Dog, during his nine-year stint with those same Cardinals.
Yeah, so the history is not good, and you’d think Luhnow would have the most to be bitter about since his system was targeted. Yet, he obviously isn’t holding too big a grudge against his former employers. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have tweeted this on Friday.
You read it right. “Go Cards.”
That was it. No follow up tweet telling them where to go. No winking emojis. Just “Go Cards.”

Needless to say, that caught some Astros fans off guard. In fact, some were caught so far off guard, they actually thought Luhnow’s twitter account had been hacked. That actually would have been an interesting twist to the story. But it turns out Luhnow really was showing support for his former team, albeit for one weekend only.
Here’s why:
We guess that will suffice. After all, the Rangers are not only the Astros in-state rivals, they’re also the team that took the division away from them last season. The Rangers look like the team to beat again this season too, so any help they can get from the Cardinals they’ll take. They just didn’t get any help from the Cardinals on Friday though, as the Rangers won 1-0 behind Cole Hamels.
Then again, the Astros didn’t help themselves, either, losing 4-2 to the Reds.
Maybe next time Luhnow should just keep the focus on the Astros. If they can’t get healthy against the rebuilding Reds this weekend or get things turned around soon, there’s no way they’ll make up 11 games on the Rangers.
