Jose Reyes played his final game in the purple-and-black Colorado Rockies uniform October 4, 2015.
You might have been able to guess that would be the outcome back in February when the veteran shortstop was put on administrative leave following an offseason domestic violence incident in Hawaii and subsequently suspended 51 games by new Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred.
Colorado management made it officially official on Wednesday afternoon when they designated Reyes for assignment following a two-week rehab assignment at Triple-A Albuquerque. Would the Rockies have found a spot for the 33-year-old had Trevor Story not emerged this season as a long-term answer at shortstop? Probably.
But here we are.
Reyes is likely to pass through waivers unclaimed because he’s still owed more than $44 million and posted a weak .688 OPS in 116 games last season between Toronto and Colorado — two power havens. He’ll become a free agent within the next 10 days and can then go anywhere he likes, if anywhere will have him.
There’s still some speed left in those legs and Reyes could quickly take on mixed-league fantasy value if he lands with a team that is willing to offer him regular playing time. Even through his struggles last year, he still racked up 24 stolen bases in 30 attempts. He had 30 steals in 32 attempts with the Blue Jays in 2014.
Reyes did hit .303/.425/.485 in 40 plate appearances this month with the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Adam Finally Looking Wainwright
There were questions about how Adam Wainwright would perform this season after totaling only 28 innings in 2015 because of a torn Achilles tendon and he did little to calm the concerns over the first six weeks of the 2016 campaign, posting a 6.80 ERA and 26/13 K/BB ratio in 45 innings between Opening Day and the middle of May. But the veteran right-hander is suddenly back on track.
Wainwright threw seven scoreless innings on Wednesday night against the visiting Astros, striking out six and yielding only four hits before winding up with a no-decision in the Cardinals’ eventual 4-1 loss. Kevin Siegrist and Trevor Rosenthal gave up the runs — all four of them earned — between the eighth and ninth.
Wainwright now has a 1.80 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts over his last 20 innings. That’s covering three starts, against three pretty good offenses in the Giants, Reds, and Astros. And if you want a larger sample size, take it back to May 18. Wainwright has a 2.50 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 35/9 K/BB ratio in 39 2/3 innings (six starts) since that point.
We’re seeing much better fastball command and a much more effective curveball. He’s back.
