Miguel Cabrera wanted a hug from Jose Abreu but was cruelly denied
All any of us really need is love, right? That’s what the Beatles said, and that’s all that Miguel Cabrera wanted on Tuesday. When his Detroit Tigers were facing the Chicago White Sox, he saw a chance to spread love and happiness to a player on a rival team. But in-game hugs aren’t for everyone, apparently.
This went down in the top of the third inning, which had been great for the Tigers but the exact opposite for the White Sox. The Tigers had already scored three runs that inning on pitcher Miguel Gonzalez — one on a sacrifice fly, and two on bases-loaded walks. When second baseman Ian Kinsler came to bat, the bases were still loaded, but there were two outs.
Kinsler battled to a 2-2 count, and when Gonzalez delivered the next pitch, Kinsler hit it in the air and it drifted foul toward the first base side. First baseman Jose Abreu followed the ball, jogging toward the stands until it landed in the seats behind the Tigers’ dugout. Miguel Cabrera had been watching the ball, and he couldn’t resist the chance to have a little fun.

Pretending that Abreu might need to jump into the dugout to make a heroic catch, Cabrera ran up the dugout stairs and held out his arms, ready to soften Abreu’s fall.
Abreu had already stopped short of the dugout, of course, but Miggy kept his arms outstretched, inviting Abreu to share a hug.
But that hug would never come, because Abreu was not having it. He didn’t appear to even crack a smile, walking away and leaving Miggy hanging, hugless. To be fair to Abreu, the Tigers had the bases loaded with two outs, and they were up by four runs on the White Sox. He definitely wanted to catch that ball and didn’t want to mess around with hugs.
Hopefully Miggy found someone else to share that hug with.
