Jake Arrieta throws his name in the Home Run Derby mix
itching to compete in a Home Run Derby. Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta threw his name in the mix too, telling the media “If he’s in it (refering to Bumgarner), I need to be in it”
San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner isn’t the only pitcher[Related: Madison Bumgarner would like to be in the Home Run Derby]
Arrieta was asked about his feelings on the derby after picking up two hits and a win in the Cubs 8-2 victory against the Braves.
That’s both an interesting and a scary thought considering the intensity Arrieta brings to every start. It may not always show outwardly, but he’s as tenacious, determined and focused as they come. It would definitely be fun to see how that translated to a home run hitting contest, especially if he turned the dial up.
“I think it would be mentally and physically draining but a really fun experience,” Arrieta later told ESPN Chicago.
Like Bumgarner, Arrieta would be a perfect fit. He’s also a do-it-all pitcher, which means he’s as likely to hit a home run as he is to allow one. Arrieta only has three in his career so far, including one this season in Arizona, but that’s only because he’s spent parts of four season in the American League. He’s had some other close calls, while racking up four doubles and two triples.
“I said I was going to hit five this year, so I have a ways to go,” Arrieta said. “I think it would be interesting and add another dynamic to the All-Star Game.”
We agree.

Of course, it’s still unlikely that any pitcher would get the blessing of his team to compete in a Home Run Derby, even as Bumgarner downplays the risk of injury. Still, it’s fun to dream of the possibilities, such as Bumgarner, Arrieta, Adam Wainwright. Maybe even Clayton Kershaw. Oh, and just for kicks, we can’t forget Bartolo Colon.
“Why don’t you lobby for me to get into the Home Run Derby?” Arrieta asked reporters on Saturday. “There are some guys that can swing it. I’d love to hit in it.”
We’re in, Jake. If there’s a petition we can sign to make this a reality, we’re fully prepared to endorse it.
