Craig Biggio’s sons shared an unexpected draft moment
The MLB draft is typically a family affair, with loved ones gathering to celebrate a dream that’s one step closer to becoming a reality.
For baseball Hall of Famer Craig Biggio though, that sense of family pride was taken to a completely different level on Friday as his sons, Cavan and Conor, were able to share a moment that was special, unique and entirely unexpected.

What everyone knew going into the draft was that Cavan’s name was going to be called eventually. The college junior had starred at Notre Dame throughout his collegiate career, but really cemented his status this past season, hitting .311 with a .473 on-base percentage, 12 doubles, four homers and 28 RBIs, to go along with 14 steals on 14 attempts.
It was only a matter of when Cavan Biggio would be selected, and that came in the fifth round on Friday, when the Toronto Blue Jays selected him with the 162nd pick overall.
Now, for the unexpected part.
According to MLB.com, when Biggio heard his name called, it was a familiar voice that rang out. He then realized that his brother, Conor, who’s currently serving as an intern in the Commissioner’s Office, was given the assignment of announcing his selection.
“That was definitely a surprise,” Cavan Biggio said. “I know he’s been working with the Draft all week and being in the room the past two days, but I honestly didn’t really know what specifically he was doing. After my name was selected and I heard my name called, I said, ‘That voice kind of sounds a little familiar. Sounds like my older brother, Conor.’ It’s kind of cool. … it was cool he was a part of it.”
It’s expected that Cavan will sign a contract with the Blue Jays as soon as the two sides are able to meet. As for Conor, he was actually drafted by the Astros in the 34th round last year after his senior season at Notre Dame, but did not sign a contract. He’s still trying to follow his father’s footsteps into MLB, though obviously by a much different path.

Either way, father Craig, who starred for 20 seasons for the Astros, couldn’t be prouder of his sons, or more optimistic for Cavan’s future with the Blue Jays.
“He was excited,” the elder Biggio said. “Obviously, it’s something that you work extremely hard at Notre Dame and then you get the opportunity to get drafted and then the day comes along and you get the opportunity to go in the fifth round with the Toronto Blue Jays, an organization that’s a great organization. They develop really, really well. Player development is great. And it’s an exciting day for him to try to fulfill his own ambitions and dreams and hopefully to get to the big leagues someday.”
There’s no doubt baseball is in the Biggio’s blood, and that blood is pumping stronger than ever as Cavan and Conor carry on the family name.
