Fifty games stand between now and the final on July 10, but who will make it all the way to the Stade de France?
The Magic Man gives his predictions for the opening round of fixtures…
France v Romania – Friday, 8pm
France are the host nation and, with the likes of Dimitri Payet, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, I fancy them to get off to a flyer as the tournament gets underway in Paris.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0 to France (Sky Bet odds 7/2)
Albania v Switzerland – Saturday, 2pm
As with the majority of the opening round of games, I expect this to be really tight, with Switzerland’s greater quality coming good.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-0 to Switzerland (Sky Bet odds 7/2)
Wales v Slovakia – Saturday, 5pm
I know three teams quality but if you lose your first game, you’re bang in trouble. Both teams will look at this game thinking they have to win to reach the knockout stages, but defeat could spell the end. This is going to be a cagey game.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1 (Sky Bet odds 9/2)
England v Russia – Saturday, 8pm
Which England team are going to turn up? The one that played against Portugal? That was a shockingly terrible performance. Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane played full-backs, England never kept the ball and they were set up all wrong. It was unreal. I’m going to be patriotic and back England to win, but they’ve got to improve.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-0 to England (Sky Bet odds 9/2)

Back Harry Kane to score & England to win – 2/1 to 3/1!
Turkey v Croatia – Sunday, 2pm
I like Croatia, they’re dark horses for this year’s tournament. They could go a long way and certainly cause a few teams a problem with the players they have in their team. I really like the way they’re set up, they’re ones to watch.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0 to Croatia (Sky Bet odds 15/2)
Poland v Northern Ireland – Sunday, 5pm
The Robert Lewandowski factor is key for me here. He is head and shoulders above the Northern Ireland team and, while Michael O’Neill’s men will be hard to beat, I don’t see how they can contain him. It will only be Lewandowski that beats Northern Ireland, not anybody else.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0 to Poland (Sky Bet odds 11/2)
Merse’s Super 6 selections
- Albania 0-1 Switzerland
- Wales 1-1 Slovakia
- England 1-0 Russia
- Turkey 0-2 Croatia
- Poland 2-0 N Ireland
- Germany 1-1 Ukraine
Germany v Ukraine – Sunday, 8pm
Germany look in a spot of bother following another defender dropping out injured. The Germans are renowned for starting tournaments slowly and I fancy Ukraine to hold them in Lille.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1 (Sky Bet odds 6/1)
Spain v Czech Republic – Monday, 2pm
This will be a boring Spanish victory. Vicente del Bosque’s men lost to Georgia in their final warm-up game but that was one of the most one-sided matches in the history of football. Georgia came out of their half once and they scored! You want those sort of performances out of the way before tournaments and Spain have done that.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0 to Spain (Sky Bet odds 9/2)
Republic of Ireland v Sweden – Monday, 5pm
I’m not sure about the Republic of Ireland. Sweden look decent, they gave Wales the complete run-around the other night.
Again, just as Lewandowski will be against Northern Ireland, Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be a class above. He is from a different planet and because of him, only because of him, I fancy Sweden to win. In tight games, Ibrahimovic’s quality will tell, the Irish defence have to be on their toes for 90 minutes.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0 to Sweden (Sky Bet odds 17/2)
Belgium v Italy – Monday, 8pm
I look at Belgium and I see a group of individuals, not a team. Italy will be solid as they always seem to be in tournaments and, with it being the opening game, I can’t split these two.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1 (Sky Bet odds 9/2)
Austria v Hungary – 5pm, Tuesday
I fancied Austria’s chances heading into the tournament until Holland rinsed them in one of their warm-up games. Not sure if they’ve got what it takes to cause a real upset, but I expect them to get off to a winning start.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-0 to Austria (Sky Bet odds 4/1)
Portugal v Iceland – 8pm, Tuesday
Cristiano Ronaldo is the X Factor in this game and the fact Eidur Gudjohnsen is still playing for Iceland tells you all you need to know. Portugal were very comfortable against England at Wembley and if Ronaldo had played in that game they would have won.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0 to Portugal (Sky Bet odds 5/1)
