All about that discount, boss: Marshawn Lynch is ‘cheap’
Marshawn Lynch had a good question in a rare sit-down interview with “60 Minutes Sports.”
“(W)hy would you wanna pocket-watch me?” Lynch asked.
Pocket-watch?
“Your eyes is on my pockets—you wanna know about my money situation,” Lynch said.
Well, it became a topic during the first wave of Lynch retirement rumors. It was said Lynch hadn’t spent any of his NFL salary, choosing to live off his endorsement money instead. That’s not true, Lynch said, but it seems he’s been smart with his money. Mostly by being … let’s say “frugal.”
While nobody should or probably does care that much about Lynch’s finances, Lynch’s cousin told a story that’s way too funny to pass up. Rapper Mistah F.A.B., who is Lynch’s first cousin, described how cheap Lynch is.
“He lives like he’s broke,” F.A.B. told “The Breakfast Club” radio show, via Complex. “He still lives like, ‘Cuz, let me get $10.’ ‘Oooh, $10? Cuz, I don’t know. I don’t got it right now. How much is them? Oooh, $40? No, let me get the $15 ones.’ Like, that’s how he is. You’ll be like, ‘Bro, are you serious?’ Like, we’ll go out to eat or go somewhere and he’ll be like, ‘How much is the whomp whomp? Oooh, hell no! $60? Oh no, no. Let me get the $25 one right there, though, the one on the side of it. Yup, that one’s good!’
“It’s a beauty,” F.A.B. said, “because he shows us how to save money, how to keep things going, and he’s a symbol of hope for us.”
It’s hilarious, just for the image of Lynch scanning Groupon for a good deal before heading out.
Lynch, who retired from the Seattle Seahawks this year, denied the story that he hasn’t spent any of the NFL salary he earned.
“That’s false,” Lynch said, in the SI excerpt of his “60 Minutes Sports” interview. “I’m human. I’m very much human. If you pinch me, that hurts. I make mistakes, [but] I’ve also made some good decisions.”
In his own colorful way, Lynch explained why he’s not free-and-easy with his money. From the SI excerpt:
Q: Everybody I’ve spoken to about you has referenced your financial savvy. What’s the source of that?
Lynch: You ate cereal before?
Q: I’ve eaten cereal.
Lynch: Alright. Have you ever had a roach in your cereal before?
Q: No.
Lynch: You haven’t, right?
Q: I have not.
Lynch: If you came from eatin’ cereal with roaches in it before, Dawg . . . Feel what I’m sayin’? You wouldn’t want to do that again, right? Once you’ve seen the lowest of the low, you don’t want to go back. But, like I told you before, it’s not me—I have a good team and some smart family members around me.
It’s too bad Lynch didn’t share more about himself when he played, because he is an interesting figure and obviously was a great player. Maybe in retirement we’ll hear some more of these great stories about him.
