Young cancer survivor shows Cubs pride with custom prosthetic eye
There are many ways to support a sports franchise. None more powerful or meaningful though than the way seven-year-old Beckham Zobrist chooses to support his Chicago Cubs.
According to WGN in Chicago, Zobrist, who is no relation to current Cubs player Ben Zobrist, was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer, in 2012. As a result, doctors were forced to remove his right eye to keep the disease from spreading to his brain.

Ever the fighter, Zobrist battled the disease and is now cancer free. And ever the Cubs supporter, he decided to turn a negative situation into positive by having a custom prosthetic eye made that prominently features the Cubs logo. That way no one could ever question his Cubs pride.
According to his mother Erin, Beckham came up with the idea himself after some classmates started picking on him for being different. He wanted to have something that would make him feel good, and would perhaps lead the other kids to seeing him in a different light, and that’s exactly what’s happened.
Zobrist’s courage and his support has not gone unnoticed by the Cubs either. In fact, young Beckham was recently invited to Wrigley Field, where Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez gave him a personal tour of the Cubs new clubhouse and the other facilities at Wrigley Field.
“He’s my idol, and I look up to him and other kids like him that’s gone through what he’s gone through and wish him all the best,” Martinez said Zobrist. “I told him he’s more than welcome to come back any time he wants.”

Zobrist also got to meet Cubs star Anthony Rizzo, who’s a cancer survivor himself, as well injured slugger Kyle Schwarber. In fact, Schwarber gifted Zobrist one of his bats, telling him that he should have since he wouldn’t be able to use it this season. The Wrigley Field turned into one of Zobrist’s most memorable experiences, even beating out his trip to Disney World through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Like we said, there are many ways to support a sports franchise. But there’s nothing better than seeing that support reciprocated to a fan as deserving as Beckham Zobrist.
