Report: Washington State QB Peyton Bender academically ineligible
Washington State’s quarterback depth chart may be undergoing a summer shuffle.
According to Cougfan.com, “multiple sources” have said QB Peyton Bender will be academically ineligible for the 2016 season.
Bender is going to stay in school at Washington State, the sources said, with the plan for him not to practice with the team this fall but rather get his academic house in order first and then return to the field for spring football next year.
The school, through a spokesperson, declined comment regarding Bender’s status.
Bender was the team’s primary backup in 2015 and stepped in for Luke Falk when Falk was injured. Bender was 53-91 passing for 498 yards and three touchdowns and four interceptions and his most productive game came against Washington in the final game of the regular season. He was 36-58 passing for 288 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Bender is set to be a redshirt sophomore in 2016 as Falk returns for his junior season. Falk completed nearly 70 percent of his passes and threw for 4,561 yards and 38 touchdowns with eight interceptions.
Bender’s status may be a reason why Washington State went out and added a quarterback to its 2016 class recently. The school signed former City College of San Francisco quarterback Anthony Gordon last week; the only QB in its 2016 class. If Bender is out for the season, Gordon will have the opportunity to compete for the top backup job behind Falk.
Bender was a three-star quarterback in the class of 2014 and was the No. 25 pro-style QB in the country according to Rivals.
