Report: Griz hire Bickerstaff as associate coach
The Memphis Grizzlies have hired former Houston Rockets interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff as an associate head coach, according to a report by the Memphis Commercial Appeal on Thursday.
Bickerstaff, 37, will coach alongside David Fizdale, who was introduced as Memphis’ head coach this week.
Bickerstaff was an assistant on the Rockets for four seasons before taking over as interim coach when Kevin McHale was fired 11 games into the 2015-16 season. The team went 37-34 under Bickerstaff.
Bickerstaff withdrew his name from the Rockets’ head-coaching search and had been considering jobs with other teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers.
Bickerstaff joins a Grizzlies team that finished 42-40 in the regular season and has the NBA’s third-longest postseason streak at six straight seasons. Memphis was swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of this season’s playoffs.
