Podcast: Inside the mind of one of MLB’s best closers
This is The StewPod, our baseball podcast with a dash of pop culture. If you dig the show, please subscribe and review us on iTunes.
It’s the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 7 of the World Series. The bases are loaded and there’s only one out. Your manager walks out to the mound and gives the signal. Looks like you’re coming into the game to get out of this mess and secure a World Series championship. Either that, or you fail miserably and spend the offseason full of sorrow and regret.

In that moment, what the heck is going through your mind?
Thankfully, Pittsburgh Pirates closer Mark Melancon is here to help. While he hasn’t pitched in the World Series … yet, he knows what it’s like to enter the game in tense situations. On this week’s StewPod, Melancon gives his thoughts on bullpen roles, whether closers pitch worse in non-save situations and how much the save still matters to relievers.
As always, Bad News Ramen makes his weekly appearance in the Three Strikes segment, and Mike and Chris discuss Mike’s recent culinary experience in Flavortown.
Here’s the full rundown of this week’s show:
• Intro: Marlon Byrd was suspended
• Should the Cubs get as much hate as the Royals for the All-Star voting?
• Mark Melancon talks Pirates and tells us about a closer’s mentality
• Bad News Ramen joins the program
• Mike went to Flavortown and discovered Guy Fieri’s love of baseball
