NCAA MEN
Oregon, Texas advance to NCAA championship final
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Beau Hossler injured his left shoulder and still managed to close out his match Tuesday to send top-seeded Texas into the NCAA championship final against Oregon.
Hossler first felt pain on a 4-iron on the 15th hole, and he winced coming down the stretch at Eugene Country Club. From a bunker short of the 17th green, he used a putter to get it on the green, and then holed a 25-foot putt for a 2-and-1 victory over Andrew Levitt of Southern California.
Oregon, No. 26 in the NCAA ranking going into the championship, knocked off Illinois in the other semifinal match.
The Ducks will be going for their first national championship.
Texas coach John Fields says he’s not sure whether Hossler will be able to play in today’s final.
COWBOYS SIGNINGS
Cowboys sign picks Prescott, Tapper, leaving 1 unsigned
IRVING, Texas (AP) – The Dallas Cowboys have signed two more draft picks in quarterback Dak Prescott and defensive end Charles Tapper, leaving one unsigned rookie two weeks before minicamp.
Tapper and Prescott were fourth-round picks, with the former Oklahoma pass rusher taken 101st overall and Prescott going with the 135th pick. The unsigned Dallas draft choice is third-rounder Maliek Collins, a defensive tackle from Nebraska.
Prescott, who went to Mississippi State, was the first quarterback drafted by the Cowboys since 2009, when they also took Texas A&M’s Stephen McGee in the fourth round. He’s just the third quarterback Dallas has taken since 2001. Tony Romo, going into his 10th full season as the starter, was undrafted in 2003.
TEXAS TECH PLAYER-GUNS THEFT
Affidavit: Ex-Texas Tech player stole guns in burglary
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) – An arrest affidavit says a Texas Tech football player who was kicked off the team earlier this month stole at least seven guns after burglarizing a home in December.
The affidavit says Robert James Castaneda told investigators he broke into the Lubbock home on Dec. 20 and took a safe with seven weapons.
Investigators say they were led to Castaneda after one of the stolen weapons was found in a pawnshop.
Castaneda is free on bond after being arrested Friday on a charge of burglary of a habitation. A phone number listed for Castaneda was disconnected, and court records don’t list an attorney for him.
Lt. Ray Mendoza says Lubbock police are investigating the possible involvement of two other people and waiting to present their findings to a grand jury.
