Athlon Sports Picks A&M Fifth In The SEC West For 2016 – 247Sports
All American Myles Garrett is described as being part of one of the best sets of defensive ends in the country
Athlon Sports is out with its early predictions on college football for 2016 and they pick the Aggies to finish fifth in the SEC West and just outside of the top 25.
“There’s plenty of pressure on Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin to win big this year. The combination of new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone and graduate transfer quarterback Trevor Knight must deliver if the Aggies are going to make a run in the SEC. With uncertainty surrounding the offense, Texas A&M could lean even more on its defense, which features All-America end Myles Garrett and rising star Daylon Mack at tackle.”
Athlon notes that Trevor Knight is A&M’s fourth starting quarterback in four years but that fellow Oklahoma transfer Keith Ford could provide a big play element that the position has lacked. They also describe the receiving corps as “having an array of big play threats” and note that the offensive line needs to be more consistent. There’s fewer concerns on defense with ends Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall and safeties Armani Watts and Justin Evans are described as being “as good as any tandem in the SEC”. Athlon says that A&M needs to improve at defensive tackle and linebacker.
In their final analysis, Athlon states that “Either Knight or Hubenak must emerge as an effective quarterback who can adequately distribute the football to an array of playmakers. However, neither has to be a star, because the defense, which made remarkable improvement in the first year under John Chavis, projects to be even better in his second season”.
