The Hawaii basketball team added some much-needed size for next season in 6-foot-8 Gibson Johnson, a power forward out of Salt Lake Community College.
Johnson, a sophomore with two years of eligibility remaining, announced his commitment on Twitter. The seventh player to accept a scholarship offer to Manoa for 2016-17 chose UH over North Carolina State and Utah Valley. He visited the UH campus last month and is the second big man in the class, along with 6-7 Zigmars Raimo of Latvia.
“I loved the coaches at Hawaii and my visit. It just felt right. Beyond excited,” Johnson messaged the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
He averaged 12.0 points and 5.6 rebounds for SLCC, the NJCAA national champion which went 31-8.
UH has one more scholarship to assign for 2016-17.
