John Gibbons ends a week of ejections with yet another ejection

Toronto Blue Jays’ manager John Gibbons has been channeling Bobby Cox this past week. On Sunday, during the Jays game against the Minnesota Twins, he was ejected. Again. For the third time in seven days.

Sunday’s ejection was brought on by several inside pitches that were delivered to reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson in the fifth inning. Twins starter Phil Hughes threw one pitch inside, and another pitch that was so inside that it was actually behind Donaldson. Gibbons didn’t like the pitches and felt they were intentional, so he came out of the dugout to argue with the umpires. That inevitably ended with him being tossed from the game.

Since Sunday’s ejection gets Gibbons to three in a week (and four total on the year), let’s take a look at what’s happened during his incredibly eventful week.

Sunday, May 15: Ejected. Gibbons is ejected in the bottom of the third inning of Toronto’s game against the Texas Rangers for arguing balls and strikes from the dugout, five innings before the wild brawl between the two teams. Gibbons runs back on the field during the brawl to defend his players/yell at everyone.
Monday, May 16: Ejected. For once again arguing balls and strikes, Gibbons is ejected in the fourth inning of the Toronto-Tampa Bay Rays game.
Tuesday, May 17: Suspended. Gibbons is handed a three-game suspension for running back onto the field after he was ejected (which is against the rules), and serves the first game.
Wednesday, May 18: Suspended. Gibbons serves the second of his three-game suspension.
Thursday, May 19: Suspended. Gibbons sits out one more game to complete his suspension.
Sunday, May 22: Ejected. For arguing about pitches thrown to (or at, in this case) his batters yet again, Gibbons is ejected from the Blue Jays-Twins game.

Gibbons has been ejected a total of 36 times in his managerial career, so he still has a ways to go to catch up with all-time ejection leader Bobby Cox, legendary manager of the Atlanta Braves. Cox was ejected a stunning 161 times in his career. Since Gibbons isn’t likely to maintain his pace of three ejections a week, and considering he had five total in 2016, Cox’s record is safe for the foreseeable future. But if Gibbons keeps this up, you never know.
