Dodgers lose third straight on walk-off homer
Through 43 games, things have not gone according to plan for the Dodgers in 2016. They dropped Friday night’s series opener against the Padres (SD 7, LA 6) to fall to 21-22 on the season. Los Angeles is 8-1 when Clayton Kershaw starts and 13-21 when anyone else starts.
Friday night’s loss was a heartbreaker. The Dodgers turned a 6-5 lead over to the great Kenley Jansen in the ninth inning, and most nights that equals a win. Not this night. A Wil Myers single and a Melvin Upton Jr. two-run walk-off home run gave the Padres the win. Here’s the video of Upton’s game-winner:
The home run came on an 0-2 pitch too. That’s only the seventh 0-2 count homer of Upton’s career and it’s the first Jansen has ever allowed. Kenley has held hitters to a .081/.084/.121 (-21 OPS+) batting line with a 71.6 percent strikeout rate in 0-2 counts in his career. Wowza.
The Dodgers have now lost three straight games and five of their last six games overall. The Giants lost Friday night as well (CHC 8, SF 1), so the Dodgers didn’t lose ground in the standings, but they’re still 3 1/2 games back in the NL West. There’s plenty of time left, sure. They need to put an end to this recent skid soon though.
Upton, by the way, is hitting .266/.346/.441 (115 OPS+) with six home runs this season. The walk-off home run was his second of the year — he got the Diamondbacks back in April as well — and sixth of his career.
