Sturridge hopeful of England role at Euros
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge believes he is good enough to be in Roy Hodgson’s England starting XI at Euro 2016.
Sturridge, 26, faces competition from fellow forwards Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy after being named in the provisional 26-man squad.
The former Chelsea player has overcome fitness problems this season to finish 2015-16 with 13 goals to his name in all competitions, including a spectacular strike in Wednesday’s 3-1 Europa League final loss to Sevilla.
Sturridge, who has five England goals and 17 caps to his name and started all three of england’s matches at the 2014 World Cup, said in the Daily Mirror: “For me, it’s down to Roy, and who he wants to select on the day. I can only say I know what I can bring to the team and what I can do.
“I don’t want to put anyone else’s achievements down… but I will just say I know what I can do, and then it’s down to Roy to select whoever he wants to select.
“That’s it. I believe in myself, y’know. I’m fresh, I’m good to go for the Euros. I am grateful to God that I am out there playing every week again.
“I am ready. When called upon, I will do the job.”
Sturridge added: “The boss has to do his job, and he has the whole nation on his shoulders, so he has to make his decisions.
“It’s exciting, there are some brilliant strikers to choose from now, and it is exciting for the country.”
