Lightning's Bishop, Stamkos out for Game 3
For the second straight game in the Eastern Conference final series the Tampa Bay Lightning will be without starting goaltender Ben Bishop.
Lightning coach Jon Cooper announced on Wednesday morning that even though Bishop is progressing in his recovery from a lower body injury, he will not play in Game 3 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Backup Andrei Vasilevskiy will again make the start in his place.
Steven Stamkos, who has not played since Mar. 31 due to a blood clot issue, will also not be available on Wednesday night according to Cooper. Stamkos has been skating and practicing with the team but has not yet been cleared to play.
When it comes to the goaltending situation, Bishop was injured in the first game of the series during a scramble around the front of this net where he took an awkward fall. He immediately appeared to be in a tremendous amount of pain and was unable to skate off the ice. He had to be removed on a stretcher. The Lightning have not gone into much detail as to what happened, only to say that he is “day-to-day” with a lower body injury.
Vasilevskiy started Game 2 of the series, a 3-2 overtime loss, and played extremely well stopping 38 out of the 41 shots he faced. Including his relief appearance in Game 1 he has stopped 71 out of 75 shots in the series.
Bishop did skate on Wednesday morning, while Cooper is hoping that his Vezina Trophy finalist goaltender can be a full participant in practice on Thursday.
