FOX’s trailer for ‘Pitch’ offers plenty of baseball, drama
Ever wonder how things will go when the first woman makes the majors? FOX’s new TV series, “Pitch,” attempts to answer that question. “Pitch” has been in development for a while now, and the series finally released its first trailer Monday.
Now that we’ve finally seen what the show might look like, will you give it a shot?
Visually, it looks pretty great. The shots are composed well, and the baseball action looks convincing (aside from the obvious CGI baseball spin at the end of the trailer). Making the baseball scenes look realistic was a goal of the production team, as our own Liz Roscher explained. If that was one of the goals, they really nailed it here.

They also aren’t shying away from some of the larger issues here. Ginny Baker, the fictional pitcher played by Kylie Bunbury, throws a screwball. She’s not overpowering hitters with a massive fastball because, as her father explains, “a girl will never throw hard enough to compete with boys, not as they start growing. It’s biology and we can’t change that.” That’s always a common point made in the comments any time we mention the possibility of a female reaching the majors.
On top of that, it’s no surprise some players wouldn’t handle having a woman on the team. The producers wisely give this task to the player whose job she takes. He’s not necessarily mad that a woman is replacing him, he’s mad that he lost his job to another player. That’s far more interesting than him simply hating Ginny because she’s a woman.
There are some parts of the trailer that get a little too dramatic and corny, but that’s to be expected. The show was marketed as a dramedy. There’s going to be drama.
That said, the line about being a malfunctioning robot is a little silly. And while you knew there was a player that was going to defend her presence on the club, you can possibly already tell that he’s the love interest for Ginny moving forward. That’s just a guess, but it seems somewhat obvious based on his reaction.
(Maybe we’re not giving the producers enough credit in this case. If that player is gay, that could make for an interesting interaction between the two characters. And it would explain why he’s so quick to defend Ginny. It’s much better than just making him her romantic interest just because she needs to have one.)

Now that we have our first look at the show, what do you think? There’s enough here that is intriguing. And if you can get past a few corny lines of dialogue, it looks like the show has some promise. Will you watch the pilot based on this trailer?
