Quintin Berry throws 41-mph eephus pitch in minor league game
If the name Quintin Berry rings a bell, it’s probably because he appeared in consecutive World Series for the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox respectively in 2012 and 2013. He was also a pretty efficient base stealer, swiping 25 straight bags to begin his career.
Other than that though, there hasn’t been much to speak of in terms of a baseball career. But the 31-year-old outfielder is hoping to change that as he continues pursuing another opportunity in the minor leagues.

Berry is currently playing for the Salt Lake Bees, which is the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. Given that the Angels only have four active outfielders on the roster, he may actually get a shot at some point this season. Then again, given the Angels lack of pitching depth, perhaps changing course and becoming a pitcher would get him there quicker.
We actually got a taste of Berry in that role on Saturday when he was thrust into emergency duty in the 18th inning against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
As for how he fared, well….
It was an eephus pitch based on the video, so perhaps we can chalk that up to a little trickery. Still, 41 mph is a little slow even by eephus pitch standards. That’s catch with dad in the driveway speed. Heck, at one time, Berry may have been able to run 41 mph.
OK, that might be exaggerating, but you get the point.

To his credit, Berry did retire a good hitter in Brewers outfield prospect Oswaldo Arcia. He also walked two and allowed the game-winning run on an Andy Wilkins single. So yeah, the pitching idea should probably end right here. You never know until you try though, right?
