“It’s extremely disappointing,”coach Kirby Smart said in a statement. “He’s been given previous opportunities to remain on our football team but continues to exhibit a lack of good judgment and commitment to the standards we require and expect from our players. He’s put himself in a difficult position but we hope he finds a path that will provide some direction in his future.”
Rivers was first cited for marijuana in November with teammate Natrez Patrick. He was then arrested again in December for marijuana possession. The second arrest meant he was suspended for the TaxSlayer Bowl against Penn State and the first three games of the 2016 season.
A freshman in 2015, Rivers had four tackles for the Bulldogs. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2015.
