Detroit Lions sign CMU's Palmer, cut Lamar Holmes – Detroit Free Press
The Detroit Lions signed veteran offensive tackle Lamar Holmes to a no-risk deal early this off-season, with intentions of letting him compete for a back-end roster spot.
But after spending three high draft picks on offensive linemen, Holmes’ chances of making the roster looked bleak. The Lions cut him today.
To take Holmes’ spot on the 90-man roster, the Lions signed undrafted rookie defensive end Louis Palmer of Central Michigan.
Palmer, who played high school football at Detroit Cass Tech, had five sacks in 48 career games with the Chippewas. He started all 13 games last year and is one of three undrafted rookie defensive ends on the roster, along with Georgia’s James DeLoach and Northwestern’s Deonte Gibson.
The Lions also drafted Penn State’s Anthony Zettel in the sixth round.
At offensive tackle, Riley Reiff and Michael Ola return as starters, and the Lions spent a first-round pick on Taylor Decker and a fifth-rounder on Joe Dahl.
Decker is expected to compete for a starting spot this year, while Dahl could see time as a backup.
Third-round pick Graham Glasgow also will compete for time at center.
