The Walk Off: Todd Frazier’s grand slam lifts White Sox in extras
Welcome to The Walk Off, the nightly MLB recap from Big League Stew. Here we’ll look at the top performers of the night, show you a must-see highlight and rundown the scoreboard. First, we start with a game you need to know about.
Of all the Chicago White Sox’s offseason acquisitions, trading for third baseman Todd Frazier may prove to be the biggest. That was expected when the club made the move in December, and still rings true today.

While Frazier hasn’t hit for average with his new team just yet, hit prodigious power has been on display a number of times this season.
Frazier managed the best of both worlds during Monday’s contest against the Texas Rangers. The 30-year-old collected four hits during the game, including two home runs, one of which proved to be the game-winner.
It wasn’t just any home run, though. It was a grand slam, and it took place in extra innings. With the game knotted up at four, Frazier stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the 12th inning. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Frazier clubbed an 82 mph slider from Cesar Ramos out to left field for a grand slam. The hit gave the White Sox an 8-4 lead.
Frazier could not have picked a better game to lift Chicago. After the team’s bullpen has been lights out to open the season, both Nate Jones and David Robertson allowed the Rangers to sneak back into the game in the final innings of regulation.
Though the Sox’s best relief options had been defeated, the team received two scoreless frames from Dan Jennings, who was credited with the win. Zach Putnam pitched the bottom of the 12th, but did not pick up a save after Frazier put the team ahead by four runs.
With the performance, Frazier is now hitting .215 on the season. He finished 4-for-6, with two runs and six RBI in the 8-4 victory. With the win, Chicago improved to 23-10 on the year.
TOP PERFORMERS
Jackie Bradley Jr.: The Boston Red Sox continue to get strong offensive production from Bradley. While the outfielder was mostly known for his defensive prowess, he’s making a big impact at the plate this season. Bradley continued his onslaught on major-league pitching Monday, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam during Boston’s 14-7 win over the Oakland Athletics. Bradley also drove in two runs on a single, finishing the day with six RBI. The 26-year-old is now hitting .303 on the season.
Jose Fernandez: The Miami Marlins ace showed up Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Fernandez tossed seven scoreless innings, giving up four hits with four walks. He struck out 11 and picked up the win during the team’s 4-2 victory over the Brewers. Following the performance, Fernandez has a 3.54 ERA on the year.
[Elsewhere: Jose Ramirez somehow got his helmet back after losing it during this slide]
Jake Lamb: Lamb has emerged as a breakout player for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season. He continued his torrid pace Monday against the Colorado Rockies, going 2-for-3 with a home run during the contest. Lamb scored two runs and drove in four. He also walked twice, reaching base in four out of his five plate appearances in the 10-5 victory.
Mike Fiers: Fiers got the best of Corey Kluber during the Houston Astros’ 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday. Fiers went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out four during the outing.
MUST-SEE HIGHLIGHT
Clint Robinson managed to play the hero for the Washington Nationals on Monday. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Robinson smacked a 92 mph fastball from reliever Mark Lowe that barely made it over the wall in right for the walk-off home run. The hit couldn’t have come at a better time for Washington. Reigning MVP Bryce Harper had just been ejected for arguing with the home plate umpire, and things were starting to look bleak for the Nats. While celebrating the 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers, Harper had some choice words for umpire Brian Knight.
THE REST OF THE SCOREBOARD
Yankees 6, Royals 3: Carlos Beltran hit two home runs, and Aroldis Chapman picked up two strikeouts in his first game back from a suspension under the new domestic violence policy.
Reds 3, Pirates 2: Zack Cosart, Joey Votto and Tucker Barnhart accounted for the Reds’ offense during the win. All three hit solo home runs, which was enough to defeat the Pirates on this day.
Mariners 5, Rays 2: Ketel Marte broke the 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, clubbing a three-run homer. That proved to be the difference as Felix Hernandez picked up his third win of the season.
Mets 4, Dodgers 2: Steven Matz allowed just two runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out six Dodgers during the win.
Blue Jays 3, Giants 1: Despite five walks, Aaron Sanchez gave up just one run over seven innings. He allowed three hits and struck out five, earning his third win.
Padres, Cubs: PPD: This game was postponed and will be made up as a doubleheader Wednesday.
Orioles, Twins: PPD: This game was postponed. It will be made up July 28.
