‘A League of Their Own’ cast members reunite for baseball game
On Sunday, the Bentonville Film Festival played host to the second annual “A League of Their Own” reunion softball game, and it was just as glorious as you’d imagine. Six cast members from the 1992 film came to reunite and take part in the game.
Those cast membrers are (from left to right) Tracy Reiner (left fielder Betty “Betty Spaghetti” Horn), Anne Ramsay (first baseman/woman Helen Haley), Geena Davis (catcher Dottie Hinson), Freddie Simpson (shortstop/pitcher Ellen Sue Gotlander), Megan Cavanaugh (second baseman/woman Marla Hooch), and Patti Pelton (second baseman/woman Marbleann Wilkenson).
The cast weren’t the only ones who came out to play. Gina Casey, who actually played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in the 1950s (and is in the front row of the photo above), threw out the first pitch and had one plate appearance. And what an appearance it was — Casey smacked an inside-the-park home run and was mobbed at the plate by her teammates

If you’re wondering why this took plate at the Bentonville Film Festival in Bentonville, Arkansas, there’s a good reason. The six-day festival was co-founded by Davis herself, and focuses on championing women and diverse voices in media. Even without Davis’ presence, “A League of Their Own,” a film that was directed by a woman (Penny Marshall), with a story by two women (Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele), and a huge cast of women who all play baseball, is a perfect fit for this festival.
Davis didn’t play, but she did manage the blue team in the reunion game. Megan Cavanaugh managed the red team, and channeled Jimmy Dugan at one point by coming out of the dugout to argue and kick dirt on the home plate umpire.
If no-shows Lori Petty (who played Kit Keller) and Madonna (who played Mae Mordabito) want to get in on the action next year, festival planners say they intend to keep hosting the reunion game in the future. Can “A League of Their Own” fan fest be far away? (Please!?)
