Miss. St. student dies after apparently falling from stadium video screen
A Mississippi State student apparently fell off the south-side video screen at Davis-Wade Stadium overnight and died because of injuries sustained in his fall.
Andrew Scott Demboski of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was 21.
From WTVA.com:
Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt says Andrew Scott Demboski went into cardiac arrest and apparently died from head injuries following the fall at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. He and two other male students apparently climbed to the top of the huge video board, and he slipped and fell from a wide sheet metal awning that spans the top of the device.
“It appears to be a tragic accident,” Hunt said.
The coroner said Demboski fell about 18 feet and landed on his head on a platform. The coroner also said that medical personnel called to the scene tried to unsuccessfully save Demboski’s life for an hour before they were able to get him to the ground and transported to a hospital via a waiting helicopter.
There’s no indication how Demboski and two friends were able to get in to the stadium, let alone to the top of the video screen at Davis-Wade.
The video screen at the south end zone was built in 2008 at a cost of $6.1 million. There is now a matching video board on the north end zone at the stadium after more recent renovations. The south video board is 152 feet wide by 135 feet, 6 inches tall according to MSU’s website and the screen itself is 111 feet wide by 47 feet high. At the time of its construction it was the largest high-definition board in the Southeastern Conference.
