Ex-Notre Dame RB Greg Bryant hospitalized after shooting
Former five-star running back Greg Bryant is in critical condition at a West Palm Beach, Florida, hospital after he was shot in a car along with another man early Saturday morning.
Bryant originally went to Notre Dame and had transferred to UAB. He and the other man, Maurice Grover, were found in a car on the southbound lanes of Interstate 95.
According to the Palm Beach Post, Grover was the passenger in the car and he sustained minor injuries. Bryant was trauma transported to the hospital and the interstate was closed for approximately three hours after the shooting, which happened before 5 a.m. Police are also seeking witnesses to the shooting.
Bryant didn’t play FBS football in 2015 after he was ruled academically ineligible by Notre Dame. He transferred to ASA College in Miami and committed to UAB, which is restarting its football program, in November. Bryant is a native of Delray Beach, Florida.
Bryant was the No. 3 running back prospect in the country according to Rivals in 2013. He ended up medically redshirting after three games his freshman year and ended up playing 15 games in 2013 and 2014 for the Irish. He finished his Notre Dame career with 303 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He had told Bleacher Report earlier in 2016 that he was happy UAB was giving him a second chance and that he felt safe at the school. He also said he had been living at a Miami-area hotel in preparation for his transfer.
“They really don’t know my background and what they’re doing for me,” Bryant told the site. “Once I went on a visit and met them in person, I knew I was safe. I knew I was in a safe environment. They’re basically giving me a second chance.”
