Giants endure another terrible inning Thursday
Even though they sit in first place in the NL West, the Giants have some questions in the back of their rotation. Jake Peavy and Matt Cain in particular have struggled big time.
On Thursday, Cain allowed eight runs (six earned) in four innings against the Rockies. That’s not the biggest story from the game though. The Rockies scored 13 (!) runs in the fifth inning. Thirteen! Rookie shortstop Trevor Story opened the scoring with a solo home run.
Obviously the Rockies did not stop there. They did not hit another homer in the inning, instead opting to string together base hits, walks, and hit-by-pitches to push another 12 runs across. The Giants also committed some errors. Here is the play-by-play for that fifth inning:
The first six and 13 of the first 14 batters in the inning reached base. Both Story and Gerardo Parra had two hits in the inning, and had two more batters reached base, Story would have gotten a third at-bat. Crazy.
Ready for the weirdest part? Just last week the Giants allowed a 12-run inning in a game against the Mets. So in the span of six days they were on the wrong end of a 12-run inning and a 13-run inning. Geez. Not a good week for pitchers in San Francisco.
The all-time record for runs in one inning is 18 by the Chicago White Stockings. They did it against the Detroit Wolverines in 1883. The modern record is 17 by the Red Sox in 1953. The Tigers were on the wrong end of that one.
The Rockies put up a 13-spot on the Giants in the fifth inning Thursday. (USATSI)
