NHL Three Stars: Murray stops 47; Ovechkin factors in both Caps goals
No. 1 Star: Matt Murray, Pittsburgh Penguins
Murray was fantastic for the Penguins as they beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead. The 21-year-old goaltender stopped 47 shots, including 19 in the third period. The rookie has now won five of his first six Stanley Cup playoff starts.
No. 2 Star: Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
The Washington captain did all he could to help the Capitals come back from a 3-0 third period deficit. His wrister midway through the final period broke Murray’s shutout bid as Ovechkin finished with 18 shot attempts, nine hits and a goal and an assist.
No. 3 Star: Carl Hagelin, Pittsburgh Penguins
Hagelin’s third goal of the playoffs would stand as the game winner following a third period Capitals rally. The Swedish forward now has three goals and five points in his last four games.
Honorable Mention: Patric Hornqvist and Tom Kuhnhackl scored a minute apart in the first period to help the Penguins pounce early … According to the AP, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby played in their 108th playoff game, moving past Mario Lemieux for second on the franchise’s list behind Jaromir Jagr’s 140.
