Freeman breaks Braves' historic homer drought
Freddie Freeman finally broke the Braves’ homer drought. (USATSI)
Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman hit a home run Wednesday evening in Fenway Park late while the Braves were in the process of losing 9-4 to the Red Sox. The Braves are now 4-17, but we must be talking about this home run for a reason, right?
Two, actually!
First off, this was the first home run for the Braves since a Drew Stubbs three-run shot on April 10 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Braves had played 15 games without a home run, but we could also factor in the five homerless innings on the 10th and seven (Freeman homered in the eighth) on Wednesday. The streak was more like 16-plus games from that point of view.
So, yeah, it had been a long time since the Braves hit one out of the ballpark.
On the occasion of said homer, Braves play-by-play man Chip Caray went with a familiar refrain for many a baseball fan:
That’s Harry Caray’s call! Or as Chip would call him, Grandpa.
Good stuff, Chip.
I would say the Braves are finally off the hook, but they are 4-17. That’s a pace of 31 wins against 131 losses, which would be a record of the futile type.
