OSU Sports: How have Oklahoma State's early round picks fared in recent years? – Tulsa World
Emmanuel Ogbah could become Oklahoma State’s fourth first-round pick in the past five seasons Thursday during the NFL draft.
Ogbah’s draft stock varies based on the mock draft — he’s a first-rounder by some, but not by all. But he seems likely to go early.
If he is among the draft’s first 63 picks, Ogbah will become the 12th Cowboy since 2000 to go in the first two rounds.
Here are how Oklahoma State’s best draft prospects over that span have fared:
2014: Justin Gilbert, CB
First round, eighth pick by the Cleveland Browns • Career games started: 3
Gilbert was recently named the Cleveland Browns’ worst draft choice since 2011 by ESPN, a statement that means something given that the franchise also took Johnny Manziel in the first round. In two seasons, he has more games in which he did not play (nine) than he does starts, and he has just one interception.
2012: Justin Blackmon, WR
First round, fifth pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars • Career games started: 18
On the field, Blackmon’s career started fine — 1,280 yards receiving in 20 games played. But off-the-field issues have effectively ended his pro tenure. He is still suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy and has not played since Oct. 27, 2013.
2012: Brandon Weeden, QB
First round, 22nd pick by the Cleveland Browns • Career games started: 25
Weeden, 32, just reupped with the Houston Texans for two more seasons after joining the franchise during the 2015 season. He’ll forever be on the list of disappointing Browns quarterbacks, throwing 26 interceptions in two years with the team, but he has eight touchdowns to four interceptions in limited work with the Dallas Cowboys and Texans the past two seasons.
2010: Russell Okung, OT
First round, sixth pick by the Seattle Seahawks • Career games started: 72
In six seasons in the league, Okung has started at least eight games a year and won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks before signing with the Denver Broncos this offseason. Okung came out of Richmond (Texas) Bush, the same high school Emmanuel Ogbah graduated from.
2010: Dez Bryant, WR
First round, 24th pick by the Dallas Cowboys • Career games started: 70
When healthy, there are few receivers — if any — more potent than Bryant. From 2012-14, Bryant accumulated 3,935 yards receiving and 41 TDsHe’s the first OSU alum to reach two Pro Bowls since Kevin Williams.
2009: Brandon Pettigrew, TE
First round, 20th pick by the Detroit Lions • Career games started: 85
Pettigrew has spent all seven seasons of his career with the Lions. His production peaked in 2011, when he caught 83 passes for 777 yards and five touchdowns. He had seven receptions in eight games (all starts) in 2015. Pettigrew is the first first-round pick of the Mike Gundy era.
2005: Darrent Williams, CB
Second round, 24th pick (56th overall) by the Denver Broncos • Career games started: 23
Williams was a productive starter for two seasons before he was a victim of a drive-by shooting on New Year’s 2007. “He was the greatest player I have coached in my 20 years,” then-OSU secondary and special teams coach Joe DeForest said at the time. “He wanted to prove to the world that he could play. He had a chip on his shoulder and I mean that in a good way. He wanted to prove himself, and that’s the way he approached every game. It was what made him a great player.” He intercepted six passes and returned two for touchdowns in his short career.
2004: Rashaun Woods, WR
First round, 31st pick by the San Francisco 49ers • Career games started: 0
Woods was drafted in the same offseason that the 49ers and Terrell Owens split apart. Owens caught more passes in his first game with the Philadelphia Eagles (eight) as Woods did in his career (seven). His seven receptions, 160 yards and one TD all came in his rookie season. He is now the coach at John Marshall.
2004: Tatum Bell, RB
Second round, ninth pick (41st overall) by the Denver Broncos • Career games started: 22
Bell played only five NFL seasons, but he had his highlights. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry in his first two seasons and, as the starter in 2006, ran for 1,025 yards. He played four years with the Broncos and one with the Detroit Lions.
2003: Kevin Williams, DT
First round, ninth pick by the Minnesota Vikings • Career games started: 193
Williams is by far the most accomplished first-round pick from OSU in recent history. He has made six Pro Bowls and was chosen to NFL.com’s 2000s all-decade team. The first 12 years of Williams’ career were spent with the Vikings, but he reached his first Super Bowl in 2014 with the Seattle Seahawks.
2000: Jacoby Shepherd, DB
Second round, 31st pick (62nd overall) by the St. Louis Rams • Career games started: 1
Shepherd entered a great situation in 2000, joining the defending Super Bowl champions. He played in 15 games and made one start as a rookie, but appeared in just 15 games in the rest of his career, for the Rams, New York Jets and Detroit Lions.
