D-backs fan catches not just one, but two Paul Goldschmidt homers

I think it’s safe to say that when most fans go to a baseball game, they don’t expect to catch a home run. They might hope to see a few, but they know the chances of actually catching one are incredibly slim.

What if you caught two? And they were both hit by the same player? There is an Arizona Diamondbacks fan who is living that life.

During Sunday’s marathon extra-innings s eries finale between the D-backs and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Paul Goldschmidt hit two home runs, one in the bottom of the first inning and one in the bottom of the ninth inning (which tied the game and sent it into extras). And the same gentleman caught both homers in pretty much the exact same place.

In an interview with Fox Sports Arizona, that lucky fan said that he’s been a D-backs season ticket holder for 10 years, but he’s been “dying for a Goldy homer for the last three years.” His baseball collection already contains homers hit by Gerardo Parra and Didi Gregorious. But he’s not going to hoard his new stash of Goldschmidt home run balls. Since he has two, he’s going to give one to his roommate.

The fan’s status as a season ticket holder explains his seat location, which is literally right behind the right field fence at Chase Field. He’s close enough that Pirates’ right fielder Gregory Polanco stared him down both times he caught the ball.

The probability of catching two home runs hit by the same player during the same game is astronomical. If I were that fan, I’d go out and buy a lottery ticket.
