Aleksander Barkov misses historic OT penalty shot vs. Isles (Video)
Aleksander Barkov had the game on his stick in the overtime, but Thomas Greiss denied him and the Florida Panthers a victory in Game 4.
With the score tied 1-1 in the first overtime, New York Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan closed his glove on the puck and threw it away from Greiss’ crease, which is frowned upon by NHL referees, and is a foul that results in a penalty shot.
Barkov had that opportunity but couldn’t beat Greiss and the teams continued on to a second extra period of hockey.
The overtime penalty shot was only the third one in Stanley Cup playoff history, as the NHL noted. The previous two attempts occurred in 1996 (Joe Juneau) and 1998 (Aleksey Morozov), both of whom were denied and later saw their teams lose the game.
The miss would come back to haunt Barkov and the Panthers as Alan Quine’s goal in double overtime gave the Islanders a 2-1 victory and a 3-2 series lead.
The wild thing about all three penalty shot attempts? Jaromir Jagr was involved in all three games and recorded points in each game. (Morozov’s attempt took place during the four overtime Petr Nedved game between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.)
Whenever Jagr retires, it’s going to be fun to tie so many pieces of NHL trivia back to him.
