Alan Quine’s double OT goal gives Islanders Game 5 victory (Video)
Alan Quine’s goal in double overtime helped the New York Islanders to a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers and a 3-2 series lead.
There was a bit of mystery prior to Game 5 involving Quine as either he or Ryan Strome were going to be healthy scratched. Quine ended up playing and Islanders head coach Jack Capuano started him on the top line with John Tavares and Kyle Okposo.
After the Frans Nielsen opened the scoring in the first period, Aleksander Barkov answered back early in the third period to help send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Barkov had a chance to be a hero following Calvin de Haan gloving the puck in the Islanders’ crease and Florida being awarded a penalty shot.
Thomas Greiss, who finished with 47 saves, denied Barkov’s attempt, which was only the third overtime penalty shot in Stanley Cup Playoff history. That gave New York a second life, and in double overtime Islanders captain John Tavares drew two penalties. The second one, on Derek MacKenzie, would be the power play where Quine, a 2013 sixth-round pick, ended things.
Game 6 is Sunday night at Barclays Center where the Islanders will look to win their first playoff series since 1993. Florida is still searching for their first playoff series win since 1996, and will get that opportunity if they can force a seventh game.
