Chargers’ proposed downtown San Diego stadium looks wonderful
Oh, right. The San Diego Chargers still want a new stadium.
Almost forgot after the hoopla of Relocation 2016 that the Chargers pulled the whole “We’re going to stay because we really want to be in San Diego (and really, really want San Diego to kick down some money for a new stadium)” business after thinking twice about being the Los Angeles Rams’ tenant in Inglewood.
The Chargers will spend the weekend getting signatures for a “citizens initiative” to get public help in getting the stadium and a new convention center built downtown (shrewd move, linking it to the convention center). NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will be among the big names out rallying support on Saturday to get the stadium campaign kicked off, the San DIego Union Tribune said. Chargers chairman Dean Spanos, quarterback Philip Rivers and running back LaDainian Tomlinson are also expected to be there.
To drum up more interest, the team released renderings of the new stadium/convention center complex. Interesting that the stadium has a roof (in San Diego?):
The renderings do look fantastic, though everything looks better with San Diego as the backdrop.
The issue will be financing it. The Chargers haven’t been successful getting the public money they want for the stadium, which is why the L.A. possibility is still looming. The Chargers have announced they want to stay in San Diego — which makes sense because Inglewood will always be Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s building and the Chargers will be his guests — but we’ll see if the latest push bears any fruit.
Say this though: If they can finally get the money to start building, the stadium looks like it’ll be pretty nice.
